Colin Cowie Contest Winner!

We have chosen a winner for the Best Valentine's Day contest!  "Smartcookie" will be receiving Colin Cowie's newest book, Colin Cowie Wedding Chic: 1,001 Ideas For Every Moment of Your Celebration for letting us in on her most lovely Valentine's Day - February 14th, 2009. That's right, it was this year and we just melted at the sweet and clever way her Valentine made her day. Not only that, but their trip across the world made it one never to forget. Just read on to get the idea...

"This year was the best Valentine's Day ever...my boyfriend and I spent the day on a plane to Japan, where his parents live. The whole flight we drank wine and ate chocolate...and slept:). The night before we left (Friday), he asked me why I loved him...I gave him some silly response like, "Because you make me coffee every morning." He responded by saying..."Are you sure it's not because I give you diamond earrings?" And he pulled a little pink box out of his pocket..."

Charleston Tea Plantation Flush Festival

Charleston, South Carolina is steeped in history and tradition. Lazy front porches and cobblestone streets lined with historic homes evoke images of summer afternoons in the old south spent sipping iced tea and rocking listlessly back and forth. Tea being the key image here. Tea is a southern staple that had it's humble American beginnings right in Charleston. In fact, The Charleston Tea Plantation is the only working tea garden in America. Laden with droopy elms hanging over the vast fields of tea, The Charleston Tea Plantation is as picturesque as it is historic. Which is why it is the site of the 3rd Annual Flush Festival on May 16th, 2009!

The festival name, First Flush, is defined as the escalated, springtime growth of new leaves on the tea plants after a winter of rest. Their "first flush" of new growth is harvested to produce what avid tea drinkers deem to be the most unique, fresh and delicious cup of tea.

However, the festival is not just about the tea. Locals refer to it as an "Island Celebration". Residents and locals from nearby towns make the trek up to gorgeous Wadmalaw Island, where the Charleston Tea Plantation is located, to enjoy music, entertainment, art and local cuisine.

Tickets for the festival will be on sale soon and available for purchase online at The Charleston Tea Plantaion site and Etix. You can also purchase tickets on the day of the festival at the Plantation entrance.

Real Wedding ~ Jackie and Stuart

We love the ultra-luxe details in the Charlotte, NC wedding of Jackie and Stuart, sent to us by fabulous event designer Sha Sha Harnick of Distinctive Events in Charleston, SC. The long reception tables, glowing with candlelight and gilded stemware, sit beneath slim candelabras tumbling with florals created by Todd Crawford of Crawford & Company. The cake's hand-made sugar flowers are inspired by the fresh florals and bouquets, while the fabric draping of the reception tent, the chandeliers and a soft color palette give the event a warm, intimate feel.

Real Wedding ~ Jenny and Joel

What do you think of when you hear the term, Impressionist? Possibly Monet's Haystacks or or the Musée de l'Orangerie in France, the permanent home for eight of his water lily murals? What is Impressionism? Characteristics of Impressionistic works include (according to Wikipedia) visible brush strokes, open composition, an emphasis on light and its changing qualities, ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and unusual visual angles.

So why are we discussing an art movement in a real wedding blog post?

Typically, real wedding features in the print edition of Weddings Unveiled and on our blog are illustrated with lots of gorgeous photography, but life (and weddings) can inspire and be reflected in many forms of art. When Andy with Portal Films sent us this highlight video of Jenny and Joel's November wedding at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, Florida, we were so inspired by his self-defined "Impressionistic Cinematography" that we decided to post our first real wedding video feature. It's true that we've included video clips in previous real wedding posts, but this is our very first video-only real wedding post. We love Jenny's chic, sophisticated style and this clip that gives us a lovely look at the filming of weddings. The cinematography is heavenly and with its softly filtered light, constantly changing frame, interesting angles and painterly qualities, we do find it impressionistic.

In his own words, Andy says:

"The films I have been creating over the course of the past few years, or at least the style I have been striving towards, is purely impressionistic. When I say that, I mean that what I capture is not necessarily literal... love is not necessarily portrayed with a couple exchanging a kiss, nervousness is not necessarily portrayed by a bride shedding tears, joy is not necessarily portrayed by smiles and shouts. Within the films I create, I do not strive to show memories that people already have; I do not serve to replace or dilute those memories. Therefore, love is more evident within a hand caressing an arm in comfort, nervousness is more evident within the fiddling with one's hair and joy is more evident within the look the bride and groom give each other after all the cheering has passed. So when I say "impressionistic" it is not because I exchange images entirely with metaphorical replacements, but rather because I tend to show the in-between moments, the gentle details and the little interactions instead of just an "event". My work is about experiencing a feeling rather than watching history. Add to all of that the geometry of composition, the emotional relation to objects and the piecing together the flow of an edit like a puzzle and you have the reasons why I call what I do "impressionistic art films".

We sent out the word to our photographer friends and they responded with lots of love, sending us hundreds of pretty kisses for Valentine's Day. Though it was difficult, we managed to narrow it down to a somewhat large selection to post for you. We've listed our Top 20 images first, followed by a bigger group of more favorites.
